Cultivating Community: How ECCO Foundation Uses Creative Arts and Sports for Positive Youth Development

Building strong, inclusive communities requires engaging young people outside of traditional classroom settings. To foster peer solidarity, healthy lifestyles, and artistic expressions among diverse young groups, ECCO Foundation launched a comprehensive youth engagement strategy in 2024 utilizing two universal languages: music and sports.

Through the IDEA Youth Network, these activities create consistent, safe, and positive spaces where young people can build lifelong support networks, practice teamwork, and express their social ideals creatively.

1. The IDEA Choir: Finding Harmony in Unity

Music has the unique ability to bridge social divides and build collective confidence. From July to November 2024, ECCO Foundation organized the weekly IDEA Choir Practice. Led by professional vocal coaches every Thursday evening, the choir serves as an open artistic haven for young people across the region.

To keep the community growing and dynamic, the network launched two targeted recruitment campaigns in July and September.

  • 10 Intensive Vocal Sessions were successfully conducted, focusing on choral harmony, stage presence, and confidence building.
  • 15 New Active Singers were officially recruited into the musical ensemble, expanding the foundation's creative outreach.

2. Empowering Social Change Through the 5P Jingle Competition

To channel this musical talent toward wider advocacy, ECCO Foundation hosted an innovative online Jingle Writing & Single Composition Competition in August 2024. The core objective was to challenge young artists to translate the complex socio-environmental values of the 5P Global Movement into catchy, modern, and accessible acoustic tracks.

The competition was a major success, won by talented local artist Elzhandy Angela Kindangen with the inspiring track "Resolusi dan Konflik" (Resolution and Conflict). The winning track was professionally produced as a standalone single, providing an engaging musical tool to educate the public on peacebuilding and sustainable living.

3. Strengthening Bonds Through Community Sports

Team building requires casual, high-trust environments. Alongside the arts tracks, ECCO Foundation coordinates monthly IDEA Member Gatherings & Sports Activities.

Held regularly on the third week of every month at a community badminton arena, these gatherings use sports to dismantle social anxieties, integrate new choir members, and promote healthy physical habits among regional youth.

Over 50 Cumulative Participants

These active sports gatherings have brought together dozens of unique youth leaders, creating a tightly-knit, supportive peer network capable of collaborating on future social and environmental volunteer initiatives across Lombok.
