Reaching Remote Villages: The Journey and Official Launch of ECCO Foundation’s Sopoq Angen Mobile Library

Access to diverse reading materials and foundational literacy tools is one of the most critical indicators of long-term academic success. However, for many children living in the remote interior sub-villages (dusun) of Lombok, accessing formal public libraries remains a significant geographical challenge.

To bridge this educational gap, ECCO Foundation, in close cooperation with the Genggelang Village Government and BASAibu Wiki NTB, established its signature flagship initiative: the "Sopoq Angen" Mobile Library. Initiated in mid-2025 and formally inaugurated in early 2026, this community-backed mobile library brings inclusive, engaging, and high-quality educational materials directly to the doorsteps of underserved communities.

This program serves as a central pillar of ECCO Foundation’s regional strategy to advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, explicitly focusing on SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).

Building a Comprehensive Weekly Learning Ecosystem

The Sopoq Angen Mobile Library is much more than a vehicle carrying books; it serves as a mobile community hub that integrates multiple educational styles to maximize child development.

  • Consistent Sub-Village Rotations: The mobile library operates on a strict, predictable schedule every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, routing directly into 5 distinct remote sub-villages within Desa Genggelang.
  • Youth Operator Empowerment: Rather than relying solely on outside staff, ECCO Foundation recruits, trains, and involves local village youth to act as library operators and reading mentors, cultivating leadership skills within the village.
  • Integration with ECCO English: The reading schedules are seamlessly synchronized with the weekly ECCO English Class. This pairing creates a holistic learning day where children practice language development alongside open literacy reading.

The Inauguration: Celebrating a Safe, Child-Friendly Reading Space

Following months of field success, ECCO Foundation, alongside its strategic partners, officially hosted the grand inauguration of the "Sopoq Angen" Mobile Library as a certified child-friendly reading space in Desa Genggelang, North Lombok.

The launch event was meticulously designed around early childhood development methodologies, focusing heavily on interactive play, group games, and community engagement.

Creative Storytelling via "Wayang Botol"

To ensure the launch event was deeply engaging, facilitators utilized Wayang Botol (recycled bottle puppets) as a creative storytelling medium. Through this innovative, upcycled traditional art form, ECCO Foundation delivered age-appropriate narratives centered on child safety, the beauty of remaining in school, and the long-term social importance of preventing early childhood marriage.

Quantifiable Milestones and Institutional Commitment

The celebration concluded with structural milestones that guarantee the library will continue to serve Lombok's youth for years to come:
